Aceh, once an independent kingdom at the northern tip of Sumatra, played a pivotal role in the early modern Indian Ocean world. It forged international treaties with over 32 nations between the 16th and 19th centuries, including Portugal, the Dutch, the British, the Ottomans, Morocco, and Mughal India. Despite its vast diplomatic history, legal institutions, and cultural influence, Aceh has been systematically erased from academic narratives. Today, Acehnese contributions are often misclassified under the labels of ‘Malay’ or ‘Indonesian,’ while the Acehnese people themselves are rendered invisible. This erasure—political, academic, and cultural—forms the core rationale of this research.
